S.S. Goldfield
The Cayman Islands and its inhabitants are still closely connected to its seafaring past. It is in respect of this proud history that Goldfield (Cayman) Corporate Services was named. The company takes its name from the Cayman shipping pearl, the S.S. Goldfield. The ship played an integral role in connecting commercial centres with the Cayman Islands. Our company aims to uphold the spirit and prominent role this ship played in our country’s history.
The S.S. Goldfield was built in 1930. Many well-known Caymanian families have a deep connection to this ship as it was built here, crewed by locals, and owned by a local businessman. It was primarily a turtling schooner in its early days, sailing to Nicaragua in search of turtles and then unloading its catch in Florida ports. It later went on to carry cargo and passengers throughout the Caribbean and South America.
While the ship was primarily used for commercial purposes, the S.S. Goldfield was said to possess a beauty and speed unlike other schooners of its time. The skeleton of the schooner was made from the Island’s own mahogany and the sails out of the finest Egyptian cotton. During her time in Cayman, she is said to have been maintained to yacht condition and won several Caribbean regattas.
The ship eventually changed ownership into American hands. An attempt in the early eighties to bring back the boat to the Cayman Islands was unsuccessful and it now rests in our Caribbean waters.
